Welsh Book of the year winner Deborah Kay Davies's collection Grace, Tamar and Laszlo the Beautiful will be translated into Arabic and Spanish in a new rights deals just announced with publishers in Cairo and Buenos Aires. It represents a busy start to the year with other rights deals also signed with Glen Peters' hugely enjoyable detective novel Mrs D’Silva’s Detective Instincts and the Shaitan of Calcutta appearing in Italian and Cynan Jones’s prize winning The Long Dry due to appear in French, Italian and Arabic. The Colour of the Dog Running Away, a best-seller by Cardiff University writing tutor Richard Gwyn, when it was first published by Parthian in 2005 is now being translated into Chinese with New Star publications of Beijing. In a ground-breaking deal for the Cardigan based publisher, the book will appear in the bookshops of China in early 2011. "It is a major step for a contemporary novel from Wales to be available in this dynamic literary culture." commented Richard Davies of Parthian. "The success of our books getting into other languages and cultures is a reflection of the quality of the writing and the hard work put in by our partners, the literary agency Il Caduceo in Milan who have promoted these books across the world." Marinella Magri of the literary agency Il Caduceo will be writing an article in the next a470 for the Academi about the experience of selling Welsh books to the world. It is part of an on-going success story for writers first published in Wales with Parthian getting their work translated. At present books have been or will soon be published in French, Arabic (2), Italian (4), Portuguese, Czech, Russian, Spanish (4), Turkish, Chinese and Danish (2), in addition to rights deals in the United States, Australia and New Zealand.
